Pupil Premium
The Pupil Premium is an amount of grant funding, allocated to the School each year to help those of our children who are ‘disadvantaged’. To be eligible for the grant, children must meet one or more of the following criteria:
- be from low-income families who are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) or have been in the last six years;
- children who have been looked after by a local authority continuously for more than six months; and
- children who have parents serving in the armed forces.
Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit. However, we are accountable to parents and others for how we have used this funding. We report annually explaining how this grant is used and the impact it has made for the relevant children.
We have high expectations and aspirations for all of our children. We want those funded children to reach national expectations or above in all areas if they have the potential. As a minimum, we want these children to achieve better than the level that non-disadvantaged pupils achieve nationally. We aim to address inequalities and raise attainment between pupil groups.
We use the Pupil Premium grant to help disadvantaged children to make accelerated progress from their starting point with us and enable them to diminish or close any gaps with their peers. We tailor the use of the funding to the needs of the individual children, and constantly monitor and evaluate the impacts. Examples of the ways we use the funding include:
- Extra staffing
- Extra intervention
- Pastoral care
- Enriching experiences

Willand School has partnered with Atom Learning, the leading Key Stage 2 and 11+ preparation website, to provide free learning to pupils in Years 3 – 6 who are eligible for Pupil Premium. As an eligible student, your child can receive access to Atom Home for free (normally £575.90 a year).
Atom Home is an online learning platform for ages 7-11. Covering English, maths, science, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, students can explore learning resources, mock tests, video tutorials and exam preparation materials. Feedback from families who have already signed up is extremely positive and pupils are beginning to see the impact on their learning outcomes.
